Taken At The Flood
Written
March 2005
Notes
Taken At The Flood is a song born partly from frustration and anger but which, nevertheless, remains optimistic about the ability of people to effect change.
Written in early 2005, parts of the lyrics (particularly the second verse) were influenced by the US-led invasion of Iraq (in which my country also participated) and the mixed emotions I felt about it.
The third verse also refers to, firstly, the way that society can be unsympathetic to opinions that run contrary to mainstream beliefs (in this case, religion vs atheism), and secondly, the way that work can sometimes overpower your life (something I was feeling strongly during this time) and the feelings of pointless that come so easily in this situation.
Despite being built on all these frustrations, the song ultimately encourages the objective analysis of bad situations and the reliance on and faith in yourself.
Lyrics
Taken at the flood, I am shaken by surprise I am walking without reason to give my pain a good disguise Woken by chance, my love for life is all the rage For all these angry, pretty monkeys living in this monkey cage
And I, I feel things could still come undone I, I feel there is work yet to be done
All uncertainty that we are born or we are made Life is holy ammunition for an unholy great crusade Thank Him for your bread and thank Him for your jug of wine And don't forget to thank Him for this brilliant plan of mine
And I, I feel things could still come undone I, I feel there is work yet to be done
In all I've seen and the plans I've laid In all I've been given and all I've made Run by fear that we've gone wrong So sure love will take too long
From what I've seen and all I've done I know every war can be won When it feels you've gone too far Look at where you really are
Taken at the flood or left to make my own way home I am sold and reappraised on what I know to be unknown All of the imperfect made to live a perfect lie Told to have ambition and then paid to wonder why
And I, I feel I could still come undone I, I feel I have work yet to be done
In all I've seen and the plans I've laid In all I've been given and all I've made Run by fear that we've gone wrong So sure love will take too long
From what I've seen and all I've done I know every war can be won When it feels you've gone too far Look at where you really are
Mixes / MP3s
Taken At The Flood (Demo Mix)
Recorded by Vent (Peter, Gerald, David, Mike, Darren) in April 2005 for our first demo. A big, catchy rock song!
Taken At The Flood (Draft Mix)
A draft recording made by Peter while the song was still being written; uses only vocals and a couple of guitar parts. As you can hear, the choruses and the ending had not been written at this point, so the song structure is unfinished, and you also receive the rare treat of listening to a badly hummed rendition of the vocal melody during the unfinished parts.
